Frequently Asked Questions

Who are Film Classics On DVD?

Film Classics on DVD is dedicated to the lover and collector’s of all films from the 30’s through to the 2000’s that have become difficult or just impossible to source. We have a large inventory of these films, many may not be actually listed but always inquire as the chances are we will most probably have them.

Is there any packaging or artwork with your titles?

All our DVDs come with full colour printed disc’s and are packaged in a DVD case with a printed colour sleeve.

What movies do you have?

We do not make a judgement on what you may like or dislike, that is why we have the full range of genres and within those genre’s we stock them all. They range from Studio released titles, through those films that did not get a DVD release and to films that have fallen into public domain.

What is the quality of our films?

95% of our films are 720P Standard Definition DVDs. We constantly update our master copies so we can supply the best quality vision available. This is the standard which we will not go below. However there are some films which are considered historically important or are just plain collectors items. These make up the remaining 5%. We will inform you of this fact before the order is accepted and or shipped. Please remember we are now in a digital age where 1080p is the standard and our smart digital T.V’s are a light year ahead of the Catode Ray Tube T.V’s many of use grew up watching. Even many Studio Archive (Back Catalogue) films released on DVD are 720p and not very well done at that. As we are talking about films over 50 years old and the 35 mm film print has not been kept in the best condition results can vary wildly. Thankfully AI is making vast strides in film restoration. Film Classics On DVD is keeping a close eye on it and fully intend to keep up with any advances in this technology.

What is public domain?

A work has entered public domain because either the copyright has not been applied for or it has expired. Anything that is not protected under the copyright law can include works published between 1928 and under certain circumstances works published up to 1978. Re-published and re-packaged public domain information or creative works are not illegal. The reason is that because the work has fallen into the public domain there are no royalties to pay on the work.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, we ship anywhere in the world.

How much is shipping?

Shipping costs vary depending on Location. You can can get a shipping quote by viewing your cart at any time during the ordering process or see the Shipping Tables on the Customer Service page.

Will your discs play in my DVD player?

This can be a very confusing issue for some people. Region encoding was most probably one of the most stupid things that was foisted onto the DVD format. It was only put on so the major studio’s could control the release of film titles in different parts of the world. Today we are in a different world to when DVD was commercially released in 1998. Streaming has killed video libraries so Region encoding is really an anachronism left over from another era. All Film Classic On DVD disc’s are Region 0, so they play on any DVD in any country in the world.

What is Region O?

Just in case you require a little more explanation on Region encoding. Region encoding is a small piece of software put onto a DVD so that when it initialises at the start of playing with the DVD player, the DVD player checks out the disc and if it is compatible to the Region the player was made for it happily starts playing. However if it is not of the same region it will be rejected. So why does Region 0 play on all players? When the player checks the disc and cannot find a piece of Region software it assumes it is for the Region the player is encoded in. This is a little bit of an over simplification but we do not want to get into computer programming and quantum physics.

Is your website secure?

Our shopping cart and payment processing is secured by our merchant processor. This ensures that all information you send to us will be encrypted.

PAL or NTSC

After region encoding, this is the next area where a lot of people get concerned about. In the days of CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) T.V’s this was a big problem. Today I am pretty confident to say nobody uses a CRT T.V anymore. Digital T.V’s like the modern DVD players can handle either PAL or NTSC. All PAL DVD players from day one were multi format so this has never been an issue with PAL DVD players. NTSC DVD players were a different kettle of fish and could only handle NTSC. The easy fix is to make all DVDs in NTSC (Problem Solved). I believe now all Region 1 DVD players are multi format, so many can play either PAL or NTSC

What is your return/refund policy?

It is very simple. If it does not work we will replace it at our cost or refund you the full amount. We have one aim and that is to keep you the customer happy so you will have a good experience and you will return to purchase again.

How long will it take to ship my titles?

Shipping is done on a weekly basis, so it depends on when your order was received. Occasionally It may go into the second week but this would only be caused by the master being updated or sometimes holidays can fall awkwardly and cause a hiccup. Any major problem and you would be informed and a solution worked out.

What if your DVD takes longer to arrive than it should?

Firstly all DVDs sent internationally have a tracking number. This means you can look up your order and track it. When we are dealing with International orders several companies or postal services are used. Take for example a DVD going to America. Firstly I contract it to Australia Post who then get it ready to ship internationally. They then give it to DHL or Fedex who transport it from Australia to the USA. Once it gets to the USA it is handed over to USPS who then take it to the final delivery address. Sometimes it goes smoothly and arrives in record time but sometimes it takes longer than it should. Film Classics On DVD has no control over the parcel once it is handed over so we cannot do anything but hold our breath until it is received.

We urge that if the situation arises that it is taking longer than it should to contact us before you lodge any claim with the payment provider you used PayPal are very fair and will work with both parties but credit card companies impose a huge charge back fee out of all proportion to the actual cost and we have to carry the loss.

What is your privacy policy?

Film Classics On DVD does not sell or trade your private information. Your email address is only used to send you information about our products and services and you can opt out of this at any time. Your email is automatically added to our subscriber list when you place your first order.

What kind of payments do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard , Amex , PayPal through our secure shopping cart. We also accept Phone orders.
